The Wagon Barn

The
Wagon Barn was constructed in the late 1800s.
The building wad rehabilitated in 2003 to serve
as the Mill at Anselma’s first Visitor Center.
During 2003, we watched as the Mill’s Wagon Barn
was transformed from a c. 1880 barn into a
facility with modern amenities. Designed by
Frens and Frens Architects, the Wagon Barn was
stripped down to its timbers in January 2003,
and rebuilt with a new foundation and carpentry.
The majority of the work was completed by 18th
Century Restorations.
Both the interior and the
exterior of the Barn was designed to retain the
buildings historic appearance. The barn’s
original doors now serve as “shutters” over the
new modern doors. Inside, slabs of wood cut
years ago at Mr. Collins saw mill remain as part
of the ceiling in the reception space. The front
doors open into a reception area where visitors
will eventually find information and small
exhibits about Anselma’s history and plans are
underway to create a Learning Lab that explores
the Mill's vital role in providing food
products.
The Wagon Barn now houses the Mill at Anselma's
Visitor Center. A volunteer office supports tour
and on-site activities. A small gift shop is
available. Restrooms will be available in the
near future.
Work on the Wagon
Barn was funded by the Chester County Conference
and Visitors Bureau, the Pennsylvania Department of
Community and Economic Development, West
Pikeland Township, and private donors.
